The Monument to the Discoveries, erected in 1960, commemorates the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator. He was the first European to explore Western Africa and the islands of the Atlantic. That’s him, leading the charge at the front of the Portuguese caravel sailing ship.
