Trees for the church pillars and other parts were selected ten years in advance. All the branches were cut off except those towards the top. The tree then continued to grow like this for ten years, so that the pine sap would permeate the entire tree and make the wood hard. The final step was to slather the wood with tar to make it waterproof.
