Hovedøya’s geology is both picturesque and unique for Norway, spanning a wide range of eras. Here you can see light-colored limestone from the Ordovician period (beginning 488.3 million years ago), when Earth experienced an extinction of 60% of its marine species. The darker mudstone dates from the following Silurian period, when life began to appear on land.
