Originating in France, the Cistercians followed the laws of St. Benedict, meaning a simple, austere life dedicated to prayer and manual labor, particularly farming. At one point, Hovedøya Abbey owned more than 400 farms around Oslo, including Frogner, which is where Matthew and I now live.
