Stagehands work around the clock to set up and break down scenery, since different operas are performed each night to allow the singers to rest their voices. Enormous warehouses around town house stage sets brought to and fro by trucks each day. The stage floor is pockmarked with trap doors through which parts of the set are raised and lowered via elevators that access a many-leveled basement.
