I love this incredible tiled fireplace in the Queen Mother’s Apartment. The title “Queen Mum” belongs to the mother of whomever inherits the throne. She was the most powerful woman in court. In fact, three famous women in Ottoman history essentially ruled as regent sultans because their sons inherited the throne as children. (Often these ladies maintained power by continuing to control their sons as adults.)
