A paved road follows the Hippodrome’s original racetrack shape, and Sultanahmet Square preserves its Spina (center strip). In 395 A.D., Emperor Theodosius decided to gussy up the Spina a bit by adding statues and two obelisks — one he robbed from Egypt, and the other he had crafted on the spot.
