The mural above the Imperial Gate shows Christ with Emperor Leo VI, known as “Leo the Wise.” After three wives died without giving him children, he married his mistress because she’d born him a son. The patriarch of the Orthodox Church excommunicated him for this scandal, so he seen here begging Christ for forgiveness. Murals like this survived only because they were fortunately painted over rather than removed.
