Emperor Theodosius had this Egyptian obelisk (which dates to 1490 B.C. and honors Pharaoh Thutmose III) carted here from the Temple of Karnak in Luxor and re-erected along the Spina. The obelisk was cut into three pieces for transport, and today only the top one-third of it still survives.
