Robed in their shrouds that represent rebirth, the Dervishes cross their arms to form the numeral 1, attesting to their unity with the Creator. By the way, the word “Dervish” is Persian for “poor mendicant” — someone who depends on charity for a living. Devotees are more properly known as “semazen.”
