Architect Arnolfo di Cambio had designed a buttress-free dome that would span the hole left in the center of the building’s cruciform plan. But he didn’t have the engineering skills to build it. The church sat with a hole in its center for two hundred years, until Fillippo Brunelleschi solved the problem with an octagonal dome held in place by chains that acted like straps around a barrel.
