A breakwater protects Vernazza’s natural harbor and a tiny stretch of sand that acts as a boat launch and kiddie play pool. But during winter, the sea can be so rough that waves can come crashing over the breakwater, flooding the harbor area and carrying away unsuspecting bystanders.
