I made the cardinal iPhone error and zoomed in on the birds, which makes this photo look like a paint-by-numbers. But at least you can see the cool blue beak and black-n-white color scheme of the Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) — it’s especially visible in the center bird. The group you see here are all drakes (boys), floating together in what’s known as a “raft.” They share this male-bonding moment after they’ve mated. The men all go off together to molt their feathers, while the women stay at home tending the nest. By the way, these birds can dive 20 feet deep and stay submerged for up to a minute.
