Beyond its fortifications, Malta’s second-most distinctive feature is its balconies. These fanciful structures coat most every building like barnacles on boat dock. We couldn’t help but take a million photos of the incredible streetscape they created. Although most date to the Baroque era (1600 – 1750), their styling hints at their Arabic ancestry. They’re modeled on the Moorish balconies favored by the Aragon (Spanish) branch of the Knights Hospitallers.
