Malta is nicknamed “The Fortress Island” because of the incredible number of bastions, batteries, and other defensive structures that blanket the place. More than half of these impressive structures date to the era of the Knights Hospitallers, who ruled Malta from 1530 to 1798. When the British took over in 1800, they erected additional forts around the island’s perimeter.
