La Calavera Catrina is a character invented by Jose Guadalupe Posada, an engraver who was trying to make a political statement about indigenous Mexican women who were forgetting their roots and adopting the manners of European aristocrats. But Catrina also represents Mictecacihuatl, Aztec goddess of the underworld, who was the keeper of bones and presided over the month-long Aztec celebration honoring the dead. Originally held in August, the festival was later changed to match up with the Catholic All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Days.
