Deep within the cistern, two Medusa-headed carvings act as column bases. Romans used gorgons like these to scare away evil spirits from public buildings. But during Christian Byzantine times, it’s possible that pagan symbols like these got relegated to the cistern so converts wouldn’t be reminded of their dark past.
