Pictured is a stunning mosaic of St. Demetrius. To his left are scenes from the birth of Jesus. Most of the mosaics date to the 12th century and were made by drawing rough pictures on plaster, then embedding them with colored and gilded square tiles of ceramic, glass, bricks, and stone.
