Vermeer’s “The Kitchen Maid” is so lifelike that you feel as if you’re voyeuristically peering through a window. In fact, it’s possible that Vermeer did just that, using a camera obscura to project a real-life image onto his canvas, then copying it almost like a paint-by-numbers. If you haven’t seen the movie “Tim’s Vermeer” explaining his probable technique, rent it today.
