Built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, the Hohensalzburg Fortress looms over the city from its perch atop the rocky Festungsberg promontory. Its foreboding hulk bloodlessly scared off any potential invaders and kept Salzburg a free state for 800 years … until Napoleon showed up in 1809.
